What Causes Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever causes are due to one of four dengue viruses. The dengue virus is transmitted via mosquito bites. Mosquitos become carriers of dengue virus by biting a human who has contracted the virus. The mosquito then carries the virus and can transmit it to the next person it bites.

When a mosquito carrying the dengue virus bites a person, the virus then enters that person’s bloodstream. This results in a viral infection that causes a variety of dengue fever symptoms.¹

Dengue fever symptoms can range from mild to severe. In mild cases, people may not even notice symptoms. But severe cases of dengue fever have serious symptoms that may put certain people at risk of death.

The primary dengue fever symptom is a high fever of 104 degrees Fahrenheit.¹ Other dengue fever symptoms include:

• Headache
• Pain behind the eyes
• Body aches
• Nausea and vomiting
• Swollen glands
• Rash

Dengue fever symptoms typically develop within four to seven days after being infected. Most people make a full recovery within a week.1
