Home Remedies and Herbs for Dyslexia

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a type of learning disorder also called developmental reading disorder. Dyslexia occurs when people have difficulty reading because of trouble distinguishing speech and sounds as they relate to letters and words.1 Dyslexia is a genetic disorder that does not reflect a person’s intelligence. Rather than impairing the affected person’s ability to comprehend, it impairs their ability to read which impacts understanding of sentences. Dyslexia in children is commonly underdiagnosed and may not be diagnosed until late childhood and into adulthood.1 2 Though dyslexia is a lifelong disorder, there are special tutoring programs designed to adapt learning methods to meet the educational needs of dyslexic individuals so that they may learn successfully.1 2

What Causes Dyslexia?

Dyslexia causes are primarily related to genetics. Especially concerning dyslexia in children, researchers feel that there is a genetic predisposition to developing reading developmental disorder. These inherited genetics are believed to affect how certain parts of the brain work and therefore develop. This translates into an inability or difficulty reading when it comes to translating words into speech.1 2 It’s important to note that dyslexia causes are not related to vision problems.3 When the condition doesn’t appear until adulthood then dyslexia causes could be attributed to a traumatic brain injury. Traumatic brain injuries can cause such severe damage to the brain that it may lead to a form of reading disorder similar to dyslexia.2

Dyslexia Symptoms

Dyslexia in children is often hard to recognize, especially in younger children. Children may start to develop dyslexia symptoms once they reach school age. Dyslexia symptoms include:1 3

  • Difficulty rhyming
  • Trouble translating written words into their corresponding speech or sounds
  • Difficulty spelling or understanding simple sentences
  • Difficulty comprehending quick instructions
  • Below-average reading levels
  • Trouble identifying similar words
  • Difficulty memorizing
  • Struggle with math equations

When these dyslexia symptoms remain unrecognized and untreated, they will carry on into adulthood.1
