Home Remedies and Herbs for Helicobacter Pylori (H-pylori)

What is Helicobacter Pylori (H-pylori)?

Helicobacter Pylori, or H-Pylori, is a species of bacteria that infects the stomach and intestines. H-Pylori works to actively suppress the production of stomach acid, essentially neutralizing the entire usefulness of stomach acid. 1,5

The helicobacter bacteria is unique in that it’s made with two cellular walls causing it twice as difficult for the body’s natural anti-bacterial agents to penetrate. The bacteria is often so embedded in the gastrointestinal system that the body has developed an ability to mask the H-Pylori symptoms leaving many infected people unaware they are H-Pylori carriers. 1,2,5

Helicobacter Pylori is a leading cause of digestive tract disorders including peptic ulcers that are non-cancerous sores in the lining of the esophagus, stomach and small intestine. H-Pylori bacteria are also responsible for many cases of gastritis which is inflammation and irritation of the stomach. In rare cases, Helicobacter Pylori bacteria can cause stomach and intestinal cancer. A person who develops cancer from the H-Pylori bacterium almost always has been infected for years. 1,2

Many individuals are unaware they’re infected with H-Pylori because they do not exhibit signs of sickness. H-Pylori bacteria can co-exist in the human body for lengthy periods without showing symptoms. It’s estimated that up to half of the world’s population are infected with the Helicobacter Pylori bacteria. H-Pylori is extremely common in developing nations where living conditions are unsanitary. 1,2,3

An H-Pylori test to confirm a bacterial infection is done in four ways:

  • Stool antigen test
  • Blood antibody test
  • Urea breath test
  • Stomach biopsy

There is no vaccine for curing or preventing a Helicobacter Pylori infection. Fortunately, the H-Pylori bacteria is relatively harmless and usually non-life threatening. 1

What Causes Helicobacter Pylori (H-Pylori)?

H-Pylori causes are not precisely known. The Helicobacter Pylori bacteria exists worldwide and is associated with unsanitary living conditions where the bacteria is easily passed between infected people through direct contact with saliva, mucus, vomit and fecal matter. 2

The majority of H-Pylori causes result from childhood factors. Risk factors of contracting a Helicobacter Pylori infection include:

  • Lack of clean water supply
  • Crowded living conditions
  • Other infected family members
  • Living in developing countries

Helicobacter Pylori (H-Pylori) Symptoms

Many people who are infected with the bacterium present few H-Pylori symptoms and many are unaware they’re infected. This is known as “silent” symptoms and may be misdiagnosed as gastritis or peptic ulcers without being aware of the true cause and therefore the correct treatment. 1,2

General H-Pylori symptoms may be:

  • Stomach cramping
  • Burning ache in stomach and esophagus
  • Abdominal pain that increases with hunger
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Bloating
  • Continual burping
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Blackish stool
  • Bloody or blackish vomit that appears like coffee grounds
