Home Remedies and Herbs for Itchy Scalp

What is Itchy Scalp?

Itchy scalp is a common condition many people suffer with. Not actually a medical condition in itself, itchy scalp is a symptom of an underlying condition that’s causing irritation to the hair follicles and skin around them.

Though itchy scalp is not a serious medical problem, it can be irritating, uncomfortable and can even cause embarrassment if accompanied by dandruff. Itchy scalp can be remedied with proper home remedies depending on what’s causing it.

What Causes Itchy Scalp?

Itchy scalp has several possible causes. Typically, itchy scalp is just dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis—an inflammatory response to yeast overgrowth that causes itchiness and flaking of the scalp. Dandruff that causes an itchy scalp can have many causes, including autoimmune disorders, genetics, stress and many other factors.1,2

Another possible cause of itchy scalp is psoriasis—an autoimmune disorder that causes red, dry patches of skin throughout the body, including the scalp. In more serious cases, itchy scalp is caused by a ringworm or bacterial infection that infects the hair follicles and causes inflammation and itchiness.1,2

Other factors such as head lice or allergic reactions to hair products can also trigger itchiness in the scalp.1

Itchy Scalp Symptoms

Itchy scalp symptoms occur when you feel continuous itchiness and irritation of the scalp. You may find yourself constantly scratching at your head but without any relief. Other symptoms of an itchy scalp include:

  • Dry, flakey skin you find in your comb or on your shoulders
  • Red, inflamed patches of skin on your head
  • Hair loss in patches across the scalp

Depending on the underlying cause, you may find that itchy scalp gets worse or better after brushing or washing your hair.
